The Australian Embassy in Cairo is looking to recruit a highly motivated individual to work as the Embassy’s Translator, reporting to the Deputy Head of Mission. 
The successful candidate will also be required to provide support to the other areas of the embassy as required, and provide back-up support for other positions during absences.  The successful candidate will have excellent written and oral communication skills in Arabic and English, possess good interpersonal skills and have the ability to follow directions and solve problems.

DUTIES AND TASKS:
  • Prepare written translations of documents, notes verbal and letters in Arabic, and English.
  • Act as an interpreter for the Ambassador and/or other Embassy officials and visitors as required.
  • Provide back-up when the Political Researcher is absent with monitoring  of the Arabic language media-print, online and TV, and informing Australian staff of domestic, political, economic, security and other developments relevant to their duties,  and translate or summarise particular articles of interest.
  • According to the service level agreements, translation and interpretation to other sections of the Embassy, within work and time constraints.
  • Develop and maintain contact information for Embassy interlocutors across government, businesses, media, NGOs and other sectors.  Manage the contacts’ database, including regular updates.
  • Provide transcriptions of audio and/or visual interviews when required.
  • Assist with Embassy events, appointment setting and act as Personal Assistant to the Ambassador during absence of the PA.
  • Perform administrative duties, and any other general embassy support as required.

SELECTION CRITERIA:
ESSENTIAL
  • Masters degree or higher in a relevant subject and at least five years’ experience in an international setting (company/embassy/international organisation).
  • Demonstrated skills in simultaneous interpreting English-Arabic and Arabic-English.
  • Demonstrated skills in rapid and accurate written translation English-Arabic and Arabic-English.
  • Ability to work in a team, demonstrate initiative and flexibility, solve problems and adapt to changing workloads while meeting deadlines.
  • Ability to use Microsoft computer applications such as MS Word and Outlook and excellent record keeping skills with an ability to maintain a database
DESIRABLE
  • Speciality knowledge of diplomatic and legal terminology.
  • Ability to travel as required.
