Responsibilities
Under the supervision of a Benefits Officer and the overall supervision of the Chief of the Participation and Entitlements Section, the Benefits Assistant will be responsible for the following duties:

• Audit:
a) Administrative actions and procedures relating to Fund participation
b) Estimates of future benefit options and entitlements in the IPAS system
c) Calculations and all types of pension benefits, computer generated or manually processed, including the application of the Pension Adjustment System in the IPAS system

• Process complex cases for payment of benefits; Determine proof of residence, changes in country of residence, etc.; Advise individual participants, beneficiaries as well as relevant units, e.g., UN Departments and Organizations, SPCs, the Federation of Associations of Former International Civil Servants (FAFICS) and the Associations of Former International Civil Servants (AFICS) at local and international locations, with respect to status of retirees and beneficiaries.

• Act as focal point for death-in–service cases: reviews documentation received from UN Departments/Organizations or families, does required follow-up until all necessary information gathered and verified, analyses the beneficiary’s file versus the Fund’s Regulations and Rules, liaises with the Legal Office as required, prepares notes for the file and correspondences, prepares the case until it is ready for calculation, keeps the Section/Fund’s Management informed of inventory of cases and progress made in this area.

• Prepares manual benefit calculations of complex cases.

• Provides information to individual participants and pensioners/beneficiaries as well as administrative staff of the member organizations of the Pension Fund on participation, entitlements and benefits.

• Undertakes necessary research in order to provide accurate information; ensures responses to queries conform to the provisions and Rules and Regulations of the Pension Fund and the Pension Adjustment System.

• Routes relevant requests to appropriate parties within the Fund’s secretariat.

• Participates in the standardization of procedures and texts for communications originated by the Section.

• Participates in the training activities related to the Section’s work, including the preparation of training material, compilation of relevant information; and provision of training to individuals outside the Section.

Education
High school diploma or equivalent.
Work Experience
At least seven (7) years of experience in employee benefits administration or related area, of which preferably four (4) years within the United Nations Common System. Experience with UNJSPF and UNJSPF Integrated Pension Administration Sytem (IPAS) is desirable.
Languages
English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. Fluency in English or French and knowledge of the other is required. Knowledge of another official United Nations language is an advantage.
Assessment
Evaluation of qualified candidates may include an assessment exercise which may be followed by competency-based interview.
